More about Custom Cosmetic Dentures

Dentures are plastic prosthetics that recreate the appearance of natural teeth and gum tissue. With dentures, patients who have lost all or most of their teeth can once again enjoy everyday tasks like eating, chewing, speaking and laughing.

In the past, denture wearers had to endure wearing ill-fitting replacement teeth that not only looked fake but contributed to the old, sunken facial appearance that is often a result of tooth loss. Custom cosmetic dentures are far superior to dentures of the past for many reasons. First, custom dentures are made of stronger, longer-lasting quality materials that closely mimic the appearance of natural-looking teeth. Second, when creating your dentures, we take into consideration your unique specifications, including jaw shape, bite, bone structure and overall facial appearance, to design dentures that are as natural-looking as they are functional. Creating your custom cosmetic dentures may mean reshaping the teeth and making other adjustments to them to ensure a secure and natural-looking fit.

Denture Options

There are two types of dentures. The first type is a Partial dentures that replaces some (not all) teeth. The partial denture prosthetic is made up of replacement teeth attached to an acrylic base, which resembles the color of gum tissue. Partial dentures are held in place by a special clasp that fastens to the remaining natural teeth.

The second type is a Full dentures replace all of the teeth on the upper arch, lower arch or both. The artificial teeth are on top of an acrylic base that sits on top of the gums. If the denture appliance is fixed in the mouth (i.e., not removable), it is secured into place with several dental implant posts that are surgically inserted into the jaw.

Treatment Details

The first step in creating your dentures is taking dental impressions of your mouth. Our dentists will also take measurements of your mouth; we will pay close attention to your bite alignment to ensure your new prosthetic will fit properly and naturally in your mouth. If teeth need to be extracted, we will do so and place an immediate denture the same day so you can chew, speak and smile normally as your mouth heals.

Swanton patients after being fitted with full dentures at Dental Health Associates If you are getting replacement dentures, we will place them in your mouth once they are ready and make any final adjustments so your dentures are comfortable.

Implant-fixed dentures involve surgically inserting several dental implant posts into the jaw. Narrow bodied implants can have the denture placed immediately, but wide bodied implants need time to heal before placing your dentures. Once your jaw is fully healed (a process that takes several months), we will fix the dentures over the gums and implant posts. Implant-fixed dentures can only be removed by a dentist. Our team will go over proper oral hygiene (including how to care for your dentures) to follow so your dentures can last for many years.
